I am using the story from the novel:

"Love in the Time of Cholera"

by Gabriel Garcia Marquez

for the month of February's pages.

I have just finished 

basting everything down 

and am beginning to 

whip stitch the bird 

representing love 

flying away beyond reach

in the night sky...

Our weekly #Hillside Heart"  [YT]

prompts this time were:

"Dog and

Friendship."

Here is my interpretation using an 

old  family photo along with 

magazine images,

inks, and a circle stencil.

I used leftover fabric to make the

little tabs that came 

from scraps I used under my 

machine sewing needle...

hence all the stitching....

This one was a lot of fun to make...

a "happy page" ;)))))

{it's funny that when I first get

the prompts I wonder how in the world I 

will be able to use both on one spread...}

This one is  a very simple 

spread on one page.

 The old family photo sits on top of

my prompt card and slips into the

bottom page pocket made from just

folding the edge of my own 

teabag stained paper over.

We are watching the Luge Event 

in the Olympics right now...

relaxing after a light lunch...

Tonight's dinner will be a 

a very simple one:

An omelet with

 peppers and onions,

two strips of crisp bacon each

and toast with jam...

Tomorrow noon my 

daughter and her SO 

are dropping by for lunch with us

after going to a local concert

tonight nearby...

I will be making my own 

minnestrone soup,

a green salad, and 

serving snowflake rolls

with cheesecake for dessert...

(yummmummmm)

My kind of meal..;))))

PAPER CRAFTING--WEEK 5

 

I made a few dangles for my "#Hillside Heart Prompts"

Journal Craft-a-long...

Here is Caroline's YT page...

Every week she picks two "heart" prompts from

suggestions we followers have sent in 

to her and some of her own, too..;)))

This week's were:

Ballarina

and 

Mother Earth..

We are to use them together

which makes for very free

pages...;))))

Below is my interpretation

of the two prompts 

using mostly magazine images that

I've searched out

from my magazine stash...

[Ballarina was really tough to find...]

I laid down various scenes of earth 

and then 

added the images that I felt

symbolized both prompts...

The "Quiet" card flips over to give

this week's prompts...

When my hands need a rest from stitching 

paper crafting is what I turn to..

We are still pretty much snowed under here, 

but today with a 33 degree temp there is

melting going on...thankfully!!!

Baby, Baby is a flimsy--

it just needs borders now, ;)))

And now,  I really wish I had

situated the two orange blocks 

better... ;(((((

Perhaps one on top 

and the other on the bottom?  

But, I am NOT taking it

all out.

Here is the fabric I've chosen

from my stash

for the borders

It is an old fabric I found [hidden deep in 

my stash] and the only one

I own that even comes close to being

in the same style as the 30's blocks...

I do love all the little hearts on it; it is from

the days when I first began to quilt... 

so happy I somehow kept it when I

did my de-stash last year...

;)))))

I really don't know if there is enough to go

all around, so if not I will use it on top and bottom

and use the rest of the green for the sides...

Isn't this a cute fabric?

See, now I realize this is not my

usual style of fabric, but I do 

L💚ve this print a lot...

and here it is in another colorway

...along with such adorable strawberries,

butterflies and perky yellow flowers:)))

Should I, when I next purchase fabrics, 

think about these types of prints???

I don't know...they would make a really

cute "I Spy" quilt for yet 

another dreamed-of great grandchild.

I have finished the cover of 

my little February fabric booklet

["#Roxy'sJournalofstitchery" on YT SAL

that I am participating in this year]

My chosen book is 

"Love in the Time of Cholera" 

by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

It is written in the magical realism style 

and features lost love, romance and

a family generational story.  

Giving me plenty of scope for images,,

I used a piece of my own hand woven strips

on the front cover,

and hand dyed linen 

for the back cover with

a sewn in beaded spine...

All very "raggy" and raw edged...

symbolizing the "rawness" of the

emotions in this novel....

The [3 signature] pages that I will be

sewing onto

are made of white flannel--

very easy to needle through...

I am working on Page one right now...

featuring the heart and

my embroidered french knot flowers..

The fabrics are invisibly basted down 

and whip-stitched in place 

ready for my Kantha stitching 

which I have just begun--

these stitches represent

the tears of the lonely lover...

I finally decided on white-on-white for sashing strips with

dark green cornerstones...

Only the top row has the sashing strip sewn to it

the 2nd and third rows only have their white sashes.

and are not sewn together.

Here is a closer view of that green cornerstone...

And below I  have set up the sashings and

cornerstones for the next row and top and bottom...

I have yet to cut out the borders--which will be more

of the same...top, bottom, left and right...

I only have a teeney, tiny sliver left of my 

white-on-white fabric...literally a smidge!!

I really thought I was going to run out!! 

Needless to say, I just ordered 2 yds of

replacement white-on-white....and only 

because I like it better than plain 

white in my pieces...

[ X-my-💙---no more fabric buying for

the foreseeable future here.!!]

Here is my finished Sentimental Scroll

on its home Bobbin...

Surrounded by the rest of my bobbin family...

I plan to make a smaller one next...

a sit-and-watch-tv-one...simple

running stitched...

I have one more large bobbin and

I plan to make another scroll 

later on this year....

Here it is partially unrolled on my dining table

I just love that you can unroll it and then roll it right

back up --so fun!!!:)))

It is too long to capture in a photo--some 70" in total...

Here is a close up of the closure--a shell button 

and white sari silk to wind around:

I really loved working on this and

 now my Grand-mere's 

lovely pieces have a home

KITCHEN ADVENTURES, et al

 

I went food shopping early this morning--

even before I had my coffee (!!)

and

snagged two boxes of the 

Bavarian Cream Paczki at Big Y

where they make them on site...

(pronounced 

I am told: 

"Push-key" in Polish)

Tom and I each had one for our

treat after putting away all the

groceries...;))))

They will only be available until

Feb 17th--aka before 

Lent starts...

After I had rested my back,

I began setting up to make my

"Porter Chinois" 

(por-tay sheen-wah)

[aka Shepherds' Pie..]

This is how stage one looks

in my mid-size shallow casserole dish:

I used:

Well-browned ground sirloin, one chopped 

onion added in to par cook

after the meat has browned, 

and  a small amount of 

either tomato sauce or 

leftover spaghetti sauce 

to keep it moist while cooking. 

 

Then I spread a bit of frozen corn

over all --but any veg or 

assortment of veg can be used.  

I just happened to have this

on hand...

Meantime, I boiled up 3 good-sized

potatoes (cut in small pieces) for

mashing with butter and milk.

(Yup real BUTTER--just a bit really

adds to the taste, I find...).  

Here is the result:

Spread the mashed taters well-- covering everything 

and make sure that they seal the ingredients

on all sides...

I dot with more (yup)  butter and

paprika, pepper and salt...

Seal completely with foil and put in fridge

until baking time.

350 for 1 and 1/2 hrs, unwrapping for

the last 20 min or so to brown the potatoes...

We will have this tonight and then reheat

on Saturday for another meal.

[I didn't give any amts as you can make this

easily for as many people you have, I have

made it for as many as 8 in a really large casserole;

I like shallower ones rather than a deep

dish as I  feel that everything cooks better. ]

(I am used to writing my recipes for my grandson, 

Steven, who is learning to cook on his own-- so

it is very wordy...this is one of his very

favorite dishes so he called and asked

for my recipe)

Onto some fabric stuff:

I received "Happy Mail" from 

QDJulie this morning.

She had written to me and said she had a few pieces of silk that

she would never use and thought, since she saw me using

some leftover dress silk in my Sentimental Scroll piece that

I might like the silks...

Soooo, 

Just look at all she sent!!

😇

Not only silks, but laces, embroidered pieces, 

ribbon trims....

Thank you so much QDJulie!! I definitely will

 be using these for sure!! they are just

so beautiful...what a generous gift...

16-PATCHES, et al

 

Here are the four latest 16-patch blocks

made with my leftover 30's jelly roll strips...

that I sewed together this morning...

I have two more full length strata--in this group

of 30's leftovers...

So there will be 4 more blocks to come...

As I can get 2 blocks from each 2 strips

sewn together...

Mary Ann, (click) commented that she was astounded

to think of what I would pay today for these 10 JR's!!

I figure at today's prices around some $500.00!!!!

(Fabric prices in general have risen and are still rising!!)

SO....

I want to shop my stash this year...if I can

stop being tempted by all these beauties that

keep on coming out!!

Here is the next to last panel finished

on my Sentimental Scroll:

I added kantha stitching and 4 little fabric roses

Two on either side...

And i am now ready to attach it to the scroll with this

lace piece...

One more panel to go and a closure...

We are all set with our newly installed

thermostat:

Here is where Tom has been for almost

24 hours now--programming the thing!!!

"My Sweet Babu" has gotten it all set

for us...he is so good at

 all this electronic stuff...

She and I have always worn bangs
