FREE FORM WORK

I SENT FOR SOME SEEDS  LIKE THESE FOR THE SPRING; this picture inspired me....

SO IN MY MIND'S EYE, I spent this early morning at my ironing and cutting stations (standing, as my back is still not cooperating for sitting and sewing  ---uf-dah!!)
 free cutting some circles and  petals for a little sunflower wall hanging 
I am planning.

 ONLY THREE BLOCKS--ALL BY "EYE AND HAND"
 raw edge-- in the manner that I did my Wonder Women Woven Wall quilt ...
BUT!!! I had to finally come and sit down; 
AND........................
I am thinking that because I was hobbling around on my sore foot, I threw my back out of alignment....boyoboyo!!  Gettin' older, or advancing as, Mom used to say, is certainly not for sissies!! ;--ooo

So, mesdames, my machine work has come to a screeching halt--gosh I hate that--it 
ALWAYS  looks and feels different when you do that, too--at least for me! 

 I get "on a roll" and if interrupted, it is never quite the same when I return. 
 Well, perhaps this will turn out to be a good thing. 
 Glass half full and all that stuff!! 

Thom goes in for his MRE test in about 1  & 1/2 hours---so, I will be sitting and hand sewing while waiting around...he has to be there 1 &  1/2 hours BEFORE the actual test....hoping he will be able to keep that awful drink down....we are pointedly NOT TALKING about it.  Both on our laptops....

LIBERATED WOMEN

"I am done and airing out on the line--it feels so good to stretch out in the
 breeze " (Quilt Quote ;--)))

this quilt was totally hand sewn except for the binding application--which I did on my Helga...I took an online class from Jude Hill at Spirit Cloth; all the fabrics are pre-washed and hand torn--not cut.  I stamped these little ladies--oh pardonnez-moi--women(LOL) and then appliqued their flower hats and leaves.

And you can see I hand tied this with bamboo/cotton crochet thread and left the ties long....

I like all my women, but this one is a favorite...peeking out....

Here is the back--more fabric I couldn't seem to cut into..

Even though it is called modern--I felt that it looked antique ...

The raw edge applique and strip sewing is done to make this look old and tattered
and I L O V E this look in a quilt. 
I have to tell you that this class of Jude's was fabulous--no deadlines, work at your own pace, lots of examples and videos and superb explanations...I would highly recommend her classes....thanks so much Jude ...

And so, with my little teapot label (oops, sorry, don't know how to rotate it)  I end my first adventure with a torn, strip, woven by hand quilt.  But it will not be my last.  It was fun and freeing...

REMEMBER ME???

I am being bound--FINALLY! Hopefully, I will become finished this weekend. 

 I have been bundled onto a hanger in a dark spare room closet  (not at all comfortable, let me say!) for Waaay too long.  I have lost my voice calling out to "You Know Who"  to come and finish me, so I can stretch out on her bed this Winter.  

The light was so bright today when she finally took me out that it took me a while to behave normally so that she (who wields Helga) could put on my binding.  AND  she almost ran out of binding and --shhh-don't tell anyone, but she had to ADD two pieces in the middle!! Hah--that serves her right for not measuring me--I mean really!!) 

She doesn't even know enough to put in a new bobbin--well, beggars can't be choosers I guess and now I am all ironed, pinned and ready and ..................

waiting--AGAIN--something about sore shoulders...hmmpfh!!

SEA GLASS FINISHED--Just my cup o'tea

the backing is a KF vases print that I just love and couldn't cut into....

the binding which only shows on the Sea glass side is made up of long strings of very old fabrics:

I like a wide binding..I know it's not in vogue--but I think it adds to this scene...

and the "stars are in their heavens and all is well with my world today"

GOOD NEWS.......BAAAAD NEWS

Good News:  La Belle Dame Tristesse is ready to be embellished and see what I got at Joanne's this morning :

A whole gamut of purples and a new gold and orange--I had a 40% and a 15% off coupon and got 55% off --such a deal!! I am anxious to begin.....

And now how did this happen??  
(aka Baaaad News!!)

See there...the backing doesn't go all the way past my front quilt piece--I have no idea how this one slipped by me (brain games again!!). So I untied just the last row of hand ties and am going to add a long piece of yellow fabric (that pearl bracelet stuff) to the edge and just pretend that I meant to sew it boro-style--who knows it may turn out to be a new way to do backings (LOL).

Here's the hand woven front--do you remember the YEAR it took me to do this all by hand??? From beginning to end--pre-washing all those torn strips so that they would ravel nicely.   I am NOT--repeat--NOT going to totally undo the whole blankety blank thing!!

I worked so hard--but enjoyed thoroughly-- Jude Hill's class online to learn to do this.... I appliqued those flower headpieces as my own twist on those hand stamped images of ladies. 
I seem to be making hats, headpieces etc on my quilt ladies.....

And so goes my week...a mixture of good and bad, and I am thankful that my visit to my Mom's went well --we laughed over her great grandgirls' playing in tubs and at the beach and over the cutest card that Fiona sent her with a picture she drew of her Great Grand'mere---so precious.  And therefore, it went well, she laughed.....gotta love that.....difficult and trying times, but happy for the "little things" .

HWXAGON PANSIES, SEA GLASS, & WONDER WOMEN

Here's my Pansies ready to bloom in the Spring table runner--I machine sewed the edges as my quilting foot was already set up on Helga and she cooperated! (LOL)

AND--this baby is on my dining table being tied after some straight line quilting lines to hold it together...Sea Glass...

and so, my Summer of finishes continues along, bit by little bit, I am getting them done.  Pulling myself along...why is it so hard to F I N I S H ?????

SATURDAY TIE-IN

Wonder Woman Woven Wall is finally all basted; today I began to tie it.

It is so H U G E (15" blocks) that I have yet to determine if I will do the Kantha Stitching.

So far,( while my "night owl DH" is sleeping in on this Saturday) I have done about 1/4 of the tying............using this new product I found at Michaels

Since this quilt appears to be old and tattered and has raw edges, I decided that a softer and more natural tying thread should be used to keep the "aged look".

So far I like how it feels.

Looks like my lady approves, too!

I have raw edge appliqued many "fussy cut" flowers  (some used as headdresses for the women) and have also sprinkled them across the surface along with various leaves to move the eye around (hopefully).

My quilting friend, Jean, was over this week to take my fabric donations to the group that makes quilts for children in hospitals and she like the older look.  As I do.

WONDER WOMAN WOVEN WALL (RSC13, also)

REMEMBER ME??? Well, finally!  All those handwoven-torn-strip blocks are together and I have added some in stampings and some raw-edge applique flowery hats:

(Sorry for the blur--my camera just wouldn't cooperate this morning).  the Stamps are from my collection that I used when scrapbooking and the flowers are
fussy cut from scraps....Here is a Wonder Woman....

I WAS going to sew it on the machine as it is huge--but I am going, instead, to try out some kantha-like stitching--as this top is applied to a light backing already, I am only adding a backing--no extra batting so it should be very easy to needle through....

Here it is laid out on my dining room table...I am still in a quandry as to the finishing binding or edging--but I will ponder that as I stitch underneath in the coming cold Winter weather.....








Now onto basting....not my favorite thing as I find it hard on my back!

Now you can see where all my pastel blues went...since it is really all tron up scraps, I am posting this on RSC13 tomorrow as my week's entry also (this is not cheating, right?????(LOL)....

Hopefully, I will get this one off the table before Thanksgiving comes--yikes!!
