I used a youtube tutorial @ "Sew Craftie with Connie" as I
like and understand her easy method;
since I didn't have any elastic or flannel on hand,
I just used fabric and double fold tape for the long ties...
And............
My pleats are not quite even! ;000
but then, who will even know when it's opened...
(the pleat inspector is in quarantine right now) ;}}}
I will be making 9 adult ones and two child sized...Now that should keep me busy
for quite a while, don't you think?
And I will be making my own double fold tapes
as the one I used here is leftover from Mom's sewing box...💖💖
I don't really know how effective these are,
but they do help stop the spread of germs when you go shopping...
We are staying put here; only venturing out for needed groceries
during early morning senior hours...
Our beach town is about to be increased to its usual Summer numbers
with people leaving New York City to come and shelter in their Summer homes...
So vigilance is the keyword...

Thanks for the reference to the tutorial. I've resorted to elastic thread (tripled) and rubber bands cut to length for mine as I had no elastic either. I did see a video that used elastic hair ties, but think fabric ties make sense in terms of fit and availability. Stay well and keep on sewing!
ReplyDeleteI really wish I wasn't claustrophobic and could wear a mask without hyper-ventilating. I live in fear of ever being forced into it. Good idea to make the masks for your loved ones. I read somewhere that actually the preferred type are those using ties rather than elastic because then they can be boiled to sanitize them.
ReplyDeleteI made my first masks yesterday, and continuing on today. Mine will go to our local small town hospital which being small and in a rural area will be last on the food chain of those facilities receiving protection supplies when they begin arriving. We found 3 N95 rated masks still in their packaging and took those along with a box of heavy duty nitrile gloves to the hospital a couple days ago. They said folks have been so generous sharing what they have, and of course we all know when we get sick the hospital staff are all we've got!
ReplyDeleteI haven't tried making any masks. My local Quilt Bee is making them by the dozen. I offered to donate my bolt of fusible interfacing to help.
ReplyDeleteI only made those 2 for my daughter's friend. My hospital won't accept them. My brother sent my mother a few from his OR. Your masks look great! What a crazy time we live in! Be safe and healthy!

ReplyDeleteHa! I made a mask yesterday - Dear Husband asked for one of those shaped/fitted masks. What a pain in the patootie that was! Going forward, all the masks I make will be the pleated ones - yours looks great! Stay healthy my friend!
