TUESDAY'S MONSTA MASH

Orange slabbing in progress on "It Was a Dark and Stormy Night..."

Here are the blocks I've made so far...( 23 more to go--this is going to be a bigger
quilt than I had thought--just because I am having SO MUCH FUN ;}}})

the top one is a new cutting
from that original fabric....

and More work on freaked out kitties....

HERE, I have set up the other blocks in progress by my machine...

                               I found this old batik scrap that I love--so in it will go

Here's a closer look at my scraps....all shades of orange and peach thrown in, too....and that little bit of light mauvey-pink...;*}}} who could have known that these Ghastlie Fabrics would morph into
another Improv quilt...

I am calling this my 4th Improv quilt adventure (of a sort)--because:

although I am setting the centers log cabin style---I have no idea how I will fill in  
in between all these different sized blocks...and they are by no means up to any final size as yet; there are more rounds to go...

I am doing the first round on each one and then will continue around in some fashion...(improving)
And
I want to add some kind of black/gray/silver: 

maybe more coin strips, maybe some skinny strips...this will also be
some  Improv ...

Thanks to DAWN & JACKIE for suggesting this slabfest...it was the springboard for this piece and a whole lot of fun...

ORANGE SLABFEST

GOT ORANGE???

I am joining DAWNIE and JACKIE (no blog)

Here are the blocks I've begun with--for:

"It Was A Dark and Stormy Night"

I had bought these Fright Night fabrics a while ago and then

asked myself :

W H Y ????

I couldn't see myself ever using them ..

(Sound familiar?? It seems I do this all the time!!)

So, although this is a scrappy slab sew-along,

I am beginning with these planned centers this time, and

then I will add oranges and more oranges

(SMILE ;*}}} ) in "scrapp-euse" fashion..

I have a lot of leftover fabrics from Steven's Going Away to College quilt--

as orange is his favorite color..

so this is the perfect way to use them..

This Gal just about sums up how DH and I are feeling around here,

 angry, frustrated, and forgotten by

the medical community...

STILL 

no answers--not even a call back from

our MD (specialist--yes,

specialist in making $$$, I am thinking!!) 

ANYHOO,

moving on

I used that leftover children's castle print that was so popular a few years ago 
(I asked myself at the time:"Now, why did you buy this??--you'll NEVER use it!"
and it ended up Waaay in the back of my blue stash)--

and  here, (amazing myself) I end up just LOVING how the people are all standing around the  edges --watching the stars rise....;))) SWEET!!

I guess you just never know, and have to go with your gut....

                                               

the backing is just a couple of old, old fabrics...softened by time...

And, I ended up by tying this one..............................

And so my Star Rise journey is over--even labelled it....;))) 

Would I make this one again?  
(Actually I do have a few leftover blocks that will become something)

Well, I certainly would make another string quilt--whether or not this pattern,
maybe not, although it was a challenge and fun!!

I truly enjoy this kind of work...I didn't use any batting as the blocks were all
sewn on light muslin....so it is not too heavy...

I am having a celebratory drinkie and patting myself on the back--
("and another one bites the dust..." yeah, yeah, yeah!!)

SUNDAY'S WIPS

I put "Blue Moon" up on my design wall as it uses 1.5" strips and thought that it, along with my new project over at Diane's ,

 (her beautiful and well thought out pattern for her star sew- a- long also uses strips-- but 2.5" ones--who knows how one's mind works, but there it is!--;))) --go and check it out--just really cleverly worked out!!) would be good to sew using the leader-ender method...
Uhhh, do you get what I meant--both strip works??? Anyhoo.....;*)))

Here is the Blue Moon fabric that sparked my whole idea for using all sorts of blues and teals in close color families for the bands...(a lot of older stash in this one) .

I also, it seems, began another colorway--if I recall-- to use up my H U G E pink stash that I never seem to use...

So here, pinks and purples...with a bit of light blue thrown in and whites...
I have no idea where this is going (either I've forgotten, or never really knew in the first place...which may be more likely considering how I seem to work LOL).

AND...Butterflies Are Free has reached this point:

I finished up appliqueing those golden leaf-ey circles...I am happy with them...
and so...now what?? 

Am thinking maybe a little flange all around of what's left of that
circle fabric...and then the low key strips I have already cut...

But then, of course, someone mentioned that flowers go with butterflies--should I do a flower-ey border too??  

Decisions, decisions--borders, of all kinds, I guess, are difficult for me to figure out--
But,at least if you don't like how they look, you can un-pick (gasp!!) them fairly easily....
so that is where this one waits....fluttering....

Sewed the binding onto Star Rise--finally!!;000-- yesterday, despite the fact that I am a bit under the weather--both the DH and I seem to be feeling like we have some kind of stomach bug...I was determined to get this one done...I folded it in half and over after sewing it on,,,haven't done that in a while, but I like how it came out...

the binding is a big array of scrappy binding bits--all
in blues that I had in the leftover
bindings bin...
So, that worked out well...

I have a yellow just budding and another
shade of this yummy apricot...

I cut this one about 4 days ago and it is still 
ok inside...do you put sugar in your flower water?
I do and it seems to work well...

CIRCLING BUTTERFLIES

THE first row of my circles added to the sashings....

three more to go.. my accuquilt Go! Baby circle cutter really is great--
I love cutting my x-tra index cards into circles and then using the starch and iron method around them ....

on the left is a possibility for the side border--but I don't know--- kind of same old, same old and bland...we'll see what else I can come up with....

Oh.............. still not perfect, but better..
I love this fabric--and why didn't I get a yard of it?? ;(((

Today, Thom and I took a ride and found this lovely tree to add to our front yard...
A Colorado "Baby Blue" Spruce...I love the shape and color...

We added it along our paved sidewalk leading to our front door... and what's nice is that 

it echoes the

blue spruce we have along the front of our house....

I just love this color--and am imagining how beautiful it will look when the ground is covered  with snow....and perhaps a few little wind chimes...
hanging from the branches....

VENETZIA, ET AL

Venetzia is starting to come together...4 rows of butterflies (see below for
the top row)

No vertical sashings here, as I want the idea of that watery background 
to permeate under the butterflies...even though they were appliqued onto separate blocks....

Now I am thinking that I want to applique something on those horizontal strips...
flowers, circles leaves--just thinking right now...

Here is that top row that I couldn't get in the first photo...so there are four rows in total-- separated by 3 bands...

And.....it is narrow (30" +/-) --so need to add some width also...not sewing it all together until I do the appliqueing...

I'd love to use my scrappy 2-sies in neutrals and darkish browns on the borders in some way...they would be a kind of coin-strippy thing.... 

This one has turned out to be quite a low volume quilt despite the brightness of some of those butterflies...

I picture the Grand Canal ---all that golden ochre-ry color everywhere--
even the waters sparkled with gold at sunset...

This will take a while to find the right fabrics and there are quite a few decisions to be made as yet....

A side trip down Memory Lane....

Here are a few shots of my very first Improv piece--I made this in the 80's before I even KNEW that it WAS Improvisation--
I just had very little of each fabric and wanted to use it up 
(one of my very first quilt pieces)

                                    I called it Early Winter.....
those little squares are all scenes of Wintery trees and limbs....

I only had bits and bobs
of that gold hand dyed 
and the Japanese leafy print...
and next to nothing left of the
wintry trees....and a little soft
gray print...and the stormy skies
piece....

You can see that the tree print gets smaller and smaller...;)))

I hand quilted this one freely--again before I knew
there were hand quilting patterns, rules, etc...
 whatever occurred to me with the idea of an early snowfall....






This remains one of my own personal favorite pieces ..........

It hangs over wine chest in our dining room.....
reminding me to "let go" of my preconceived notions and go with the flow....

Midnight Garden Update: (WHILE HUMMING THE TITLE ABOVE OF COURSE)

I am slowly hand quilting my 1st Coin Toss Improv piece nightly while watching the
Red Sox on tv...
.(I WILL BE DOING SOME THIS AFTERNOON AS THE GAME IS AT 1:00);)))

Using lovely purple thread and big stitches:

No 8 a lot...
gives texture...

I am following the curved inset strip lines so far--thinking about adding other quilt lines....

Look what FINALLY bloomed for me..;)))

These were a FREE (yup!) bonus when I ordered my lilies...aren't they are simply gorgeous!!

Here are all my "Venezia" butterflies...this will be a memory quilt for us of our trip to Italy ..........see why? 

this subtle background fabric has scenes of the Grand canal and sites in Venice--

I love love love this fabric....as a matter of fact I am turning into something of
a brown/beige/neutral freak these days.
  
I just ordered a bunch of browns from equilter as they sent me a special $12 off coupon --(uhhh, do I buy a lot of fabric??? who Moi?  And wha hoppen to that
"No fabric buying this year, huh?  Huh?)
