I have finished the hand quilting
around the basket of Lollipop Flowers...
I have a question from a newbie (moi)
appliquer
for all you appliquers
out there:
I haven't quilted the navy basket itself,
and I don't know if it would be
a good thing to do????
Or not????
those stitches surrounding it...
??????
What do you recommend???
If I would quilt it,
I think I would use
a darker thread
and not the creamy white....as
I love how the basket pops
against the background.

booklet is "Snow" by John Banville--
one of my favorite mystery reads and
perfect, I thought for
January's volume...
I used the white sari silk to
represent snow drifting;
the dotty fabric will become
embroidered snowflakes;
the netting is from part of an
old tablecloth of my
Mother's;
and the little house represents
our home....
I will be dotting the sari silk with
those white Mikuyu beads...
I am still stitching it all in place...
just a little at a time...
Below is the cover for this little volume...
I wove this little piece quite
a while ago...
and.....
I've attached it to some more of
the remnants of the blue
dress my Mom made me for
the back cover....
All the pages and the cover are backed with
soft flannel for ease of sewing...
and here are both the inside cover pages:
are LEGIBLE!!! Not so easy...
On the inside of the front cover
is a little pocket to hold any little
photos I may take in January documenting
snowfall using
my little Canon miniprinter...

HELGA is all packed up and ready to go for her
"Spa" treatment this coming week...
While she is gone, I plan to "deep clean"
all around and beside her normal spot...

I prepared it early this morning
and will just pop her into the
oven for 1.75 hrs .....
I love not having to cook @ 4 pm...

I would do some stitching on the basket and I like your idea of using a darker thread - just to give it some texture. I have been pondering Roxy’s journal idea. I like using a book for inspiration and love what you are doing with Snow.

PS since I hate to embroider esp words I d prob print the text bits on cotton/ silk or paper and sew them on. Just a thought.
I think a few stitches -- maybe "ribs" would enhance the basket. The journal pages are so pretty!
ReplyDeleteThe quilting on Lollipop Flowers is looking great so far. I'm no expert -- as you know -- but cross-hatch quilting in a dark thread on the basket may give it a "weave" look (?). Your book is a fun project. I love that you made a pocket to hold photos. You are creating some real treasures, Julierose.
ReplyDeleteOooh , I just love the lollipop flower basket. Your quilting is gorgeous. Hmmm as for your question. I think adding some quilting to the basket would look great . It is exciting to see the beginnings of your 2026 journal. I love how you weave in your family history with scraps of fabrics from your family. ReplyDeletePS forgot to say again how I love the Bowl of Crocus. And yes I'd quilt the bowl but in dark thread and a strong geometric pattern, like vertical or horizontal lines or curves that follow the bowl's shape. To delineate the object from the meander background.
ReplyDeleteI love your dense quilting in the background of the flowers! I don't know a lot about quilting of applique, but depending on the size of that pot, it might need some stitches in it to hold it to the background. Your stitchery journal looks interesting! Is that a stitch-along?
ReplyDeleteI remember my early tries to embroider words. I was probably a teenager or in my early 20s. The first tries weren't legible but I kept at it.
ReplyDeleteI love that background quilting, it looks so lovely. I would definitely quilt the basket to help it lay flat and use a dark color thread so it doesn't detract from the rest of the quilting. Your little book is so dainty and sweet. You are so lucky to have vintage fabrics from your family to add to your projects.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness!!! I just LOVE all that filling stitches on your applique project!!! LOVE IT!!! Your stitchery journal is adorable as well. I don't know about stitching the applique. I would probably add some stitching to the basket.
ReplyDeleteYou could try some straight line cross hatching. It's easy and looks great on a basket. I love the idea of the 2026 journal. You always come up with the best ideas for these projects!
