In the meantime, in between time, I am making great progress
on Swiss Crosses:↓↓↓↓ My happy place quilt;))))
I am just quilting on the white fabrics and
leaving the burgundy to stand out....
One and one-half more triangles to finish...
I rarely use white in my quilts--but this piece has really changed
my thinking...I love how the hand quilting looks on the
white/off white fabrics...💗💝

easy dinner--
then... I am soaking some Navy beans and de-frosting
a small piece of ham for my Senate Bean soup which I will be making
tomorrow...we just love soup around here...

I'm all confused as to what day it is also! Glad it's not just me! I love using white fabric in my quilts. I feel it gives it a crisp look! I'm not sure what color to use for your sashing strips. A very pale pink?? Not sure!
ReplyDeleteHi! I *told* you the dark green was too heavy! LOL, to I m sorry you are disappointed. I would put the white like you have already used, give it a pretty swag quilting stitch. Or try a pretty but busy Xmas print?

Hmmm....puzzling.....I am not a sane quilter by any means but what if you were to sew the smaller red blocks (with the white/off white sashing you already have) into larger blocks using 4 of the small ones, and then add the stripping between those with the green? Or even more white?? Have the green strips surround the larger blocks so it goes in both directions? I'm not very good at describing what I mean....hope you can 'see' it.
ReplyDeleteI was going to suggest shading the sashing from center out both sides but I also like Magpie's idea. Make white crosses and sash those with something both ways.

ReplyDeleteI think the problem stems from your vertical sashing being a dark solid - what if you try a burgundy to darker pink tonal print, stripe, or floral? Maybe that would soften things and blend it all together. (I agree with you that the green is too heavy.)

ReplyDeleteHow about a blue for a red white blue kinda theme? Or gray? Something a little soft. Even a softer sage green may work. Then it may look like roses in the garden. I hate when the execution looks nothing like you envisioned. What about a rose floral?
ReplyDeleteOk, ten comments equal ten different options. I rather like the idea of darker vertical sashing, maybe even a black tone on tone. Maybe make them narrower to just give some separation to the reds and white. I'm sure the end result will be lovely and some quilts really benefit from some time-out. ReplyDeleteLOL I listened to the radio on the way to work and a comment was this is the most Monday feeling non Monday in my life. I had grilled ham and cheese for dinner. As to the time out quilt. Um I got nothin'.
ReplyDeleteOh my- this is taking it's time now, isn't it? Dilemma. What if... you dropped every other row of blocks down so they are offset or "stepped" down- then put in your color sashing? Hard to envision, but I kind of have it in my mind. Yes to soup. Yes to leftover meatloaf sandwiches.

If you want a 'softer' look I'd try more of that cream fabric you used in your strips as a divider and you could do some lovely embroidery stitches by hand or machine (thinking a soft green with red/pink rosettes). Or a pretty strip of print - cream background with a nice red/pink flowery print? Lots of options. Good luck. We had taco's for dinner tonight. I hear Hubby is making beef stroganoff for us tomorrow as kids and I are hitting a museum and should be home for a late dinner.
ReplyDeleteThat’s funny, because we had meatloaf tonight too - with leftover mashed potatoes and some corn I froze last fall from the Farmer’s Market. BRuce calls these old-fashioned meals “good grub”. I’ve been confuzzled about the days, too. Being retired means it’s not all that important - except when one has somewhere to go!!

I am using some of the glitter Christmas fabric in coins too...it’s small pieces so that,s the only pattern that works...I plan to use white strips between the rows.
